Mr.Children - Kurumi lyric

Kurumi (Walnut)

03.11.20
Artist: Mr Children
Title: Kurumi (Walnut)
Words: Sakurai Kazutoshi
Music: Sakurai Kazutoshi

tell me, Kurumi
What do you see looking at this city
How do I look to you now?

tell me, Kurumi
When I start to hear the sarcasm in someone’s kindness
What am I to do?

Remembering only the good times
though it makes me feel like I’ve aged a sum
But you gotta be one of the gears
trying to get turning
You can have only as much despair as you have hope.
but still, my heart trembles at the thought of the future
‘what’s going to happen?’
I try to imagine.

tell me, Kurumi
If time will eventually wash it all away
then life must be a simple affair.

tell me, Kurumi
since then I haven’t cried once
but, neither have I had many good laughs

Somewhere I did up the buttons wrong,
by the time I notice, there’s one button leftover
and similarly one button hole, in need of a button
If you find meaning in finding someone then fine
you can have only as many partings
as you do encounters
still my heart trembles at the thought of hope.
everytime I encounter a crossroads
I’ll fret over which way to go but…

Eventhough I want more than I have now
I sing for an unchanging love
that’s what makes the gears turn
with the burden of more than I need,
making a dull grinding sound
you can have only as much despair as you do hope
and still my heart trembles
at the thought of the future
“what’s going to happen?”
let’s imagine
you can have only as many partings
as you do encounters
and still my heart trembles at the thought of hope
guess there’s no turning back,
so I’ll go on, to a road without you.

Translated By: Brian Stewart & Takako Sakuma

Translator’s Notes: The title of this song is Kurumi like a woman’s name.
I suppose there might be some woman in the US named Walnut. But I’ve left
it as Kurumi to reflect this.

Plot

The Tweedys run a chicken farm in Yorkshire, England, in the manner of a World War II POW camp. One chicken, Ginger, continually tries to get the chickens (including her best friends Babs {who loves knitting as her favorite hobby} and Bunty) to escape from the coop using various plans and contraband obtained through two rats, Nick and Fetcher. They sometimes involve going under the fence. However, Ginger is always caught by Mr. Tweedy and his dogs, and while she is kept in solitary confinement, she comes to realize their only hope of escape is to fly over the coop's fence.

Mrs. Tweedy, struggling to keep the farm financially viable on dwindling egg production, decides to convert the farm from egg production to chicken pies, and orders a giant pie-making machine. Mr. Tweedy believes the chickens are plotting a big escape, but Mrs. Tweedy dismisses the idea as paranoia and does so in a rude domineering manner. While the Tweedys await delivery, a Rhode Island Red rooster named Rocky Rhodes appears to "fly" into the coop, though damaging his wing on landing. While the other chickens fawn over him, Ginger convinces Rocky to help teach them how to fly.

Unable to admit that he cannot actually fly, Rocky plays for time by putting the chickens through seemingly-futile training exercises while he tends to his injured wing. At the same time, the Tweedys provide the chickens with more food in order to make them plumper for their pies. The pie-making machine soon arrives, and as Mr. Tweedy begins construction, Ginger realizes what Mrs. Tweedy's plan is, and that they have very limited time to escape. With the machine completed, Mr. Tweedy attempts to put Ginger through the machine, but she is saved by Rocky, and they are able to disable the machine, giving themselves some more time while Mr. Tweedy tends to its repair.

The next day, Ginger finds Rocky has fled, leaving behind a part of a poster that explains that he was a circus act, only "flying" over the land after being launched out of a cannon. Ginger and the other chickens lose hope of escape, cumulating in a huge brawl in the mud, until Ginger finds out that Fowler, the farm's aged rooster, was once an honorary member of the Royal Air Force. With Fowler's knowledge, and with the nervous and nerdy Mack's aeronautical engineering, they begin working hastily to create a flying machine. The machine would be pedal-powered by the chickens themselves, in secret from Mr. Tweedy, who has become suspect of the chickens' ingenuity. The craft is completed even as the repairs on the pie-making machine are completed. As Mr. Tweedy attempts to grab the chickens, he is restrained by the attacking chickens and 'hidden' under one of the coops.

The chickens quickly assemble their plane and attempt to take off, despite Mr. Tweedy's attempt to stop them. Mrs. Tweedy hears the commotion outside and arrives armed with a hatchet, attempting to halt the plan from flying by killing Rocky and Ginger. However, she is almost killed when the combined efforts of the craft, Rocky and Ginger knock her hatchet out of her hands and it lands within inches of her neck; she merely faints. Rocky and Ginger continue to enable the escape by righting the chicken's makeshift launching ramp (which Mr. Tweedy had knocked down earlier), succeed in doing so and grab onto a string of lights unceremoniously trailing from the craft. However, Mrs. Tweedy (recovered from her earlier shock) is able to grab onto the string of lights from the plane before it takes off. Ginger attempts to sever the bond to detach Mrs. Tweedy, for in addition to her threat, her weight is too much for the chickens to keep the plane airborne. She manages to trick Mrs. Tweedy into cutting the light string with her hatchet, just barely escaping death in the process. This causes Mrs. Tweedy to fall right into a vent on the pie-making machine; the machine explodes in a mushroom cloud of gravy, and destroys the Tweedy's barn, leaving just the door standing. Mr. Tweedy reminds his irate wife that he had warned her about the chickens, and then the door falls on top of her before she can react. Rocky, Ginger, and the other chickens celebrate as they fly off. At the end of the film, the chickens have found themselves a protected bird sanctuary to live in and raise their chicks, with Rocky and Ginger having become a couple. As the credits roll, Nick and Fetcher discuss the chicken and the egg theory.

Plot

OH Dae-su (CHOI Min-sik) is an ordinary Seoul businessman with a wife and little daughter who, after a drunken night on the town, is locked up in a strange, private “prison” for 15 years. No one will tell him why he is there and whom his jailer is, but he is kept in reasonably comfortable quarters and has a TV to keep him company. While watching TV, he discovers that he has been framed for his wife’s murder and realizes that, during one of the occasions in which he was knocked out with gas, someone has drawn blood from him and left it at the scene of the crime. The imprisonment lasts for fifteen years until Dae-su finds himself unexpectedly deposited on a grass-covered high-rise rooftop.

OH Dae-su is determined to discover who his mysterious enemy is. He gets his first clue when a homeless man hands him a cell phone and a wallet full of cash. Later, while Dae-su is eating in a Japanese restaurant, the phone rings and a voice challenges him to find the reason for his imprisonment.

Dae-su blacks out only to awaken in the apartment of the restaurant’s pretty, young waitress, Mido (GANG Hye-jung). Mido helps him search for his hidden prison, but one night, Dae-su finds Mido exchanging emails with a mysterious stranger who seems to know all about him. Convinced Mido has betrayed him, he continues the search on his own.

Dae-su locates his former prison and beats up the gangsters who served as his captors. A tape offers clues as to his enemy’s motives, but not his identity. Dae-su blacks out on the street and after being helped into a cab by his mysterious, but still unnamed foe, he ends up back at Mido’s. An old friend who owns a cyber café helps Dae-su discover that Mido’s emailer, “Evergreen”, is indeed the man who had him locked up. Dae-su is enraged by Mido’s apparent betrayal, but a face-to-face confrontation with his smooth-talking adversary ends with Dae-Su’s conviction that she is innocent. The man gives Dae-su five days to discover who he is and why he imprisoned him. He is told that if he succeeds, the man will kill himself; if he does not, he will kill Mido.

Final clues lead Dae-su back to his old high school, where he discovers that his enemy is fellow graduate LEE Woo-jin (YOO Ji-tae), whose sister, Soo-ah (YOON Jin-seo), committed suicide years before. IM Kwon-taek's ninety-fifth film tells the story of renowned nineteenth-century painter Jang Seung-up (Choi Min-Sik), an artist whose revolutionary work - and persona - has forever changed the face of Korean art.

Chihwaseon begins in the 1850s, when Kim Byung-moon (Ahn Sung-Kee) saves the young Jang Seung-up from being beaten by a group of drifters. In return, Jang draws him a picture, and as Kim carefully examines the child's rough drawing, he notices the extraordinary potential of the young boy. Years later, Kim Byung-moon becomes JANG Seung-up's mentor and encourages him to pursue the life of an artist. Kim eventually gives Jang the pen name of Oh-won.

Later on his life, Jang Seung-up meets Mae-hyang, a daughter of a Yangban (social elite) who attracts him deeply. Although their passion is strong, they are eventually forced to separate when she runs away from catholic persecution.

JANG Seung-up eventually leaves his house and wanders about in pursuit of "true art," soon realizing that it is through pleasure that he can produce his greatest works. Oh-won's life is thus marked by the paradox of his inspiration derived by addiction to alcohol and convoluted love affairs with women.

As Jang continues to search for artistic transcendence, he stretches the limits of traditional Korean art, rapidly becoming a worldwide artistic reference - and one of Korea's national legends.

An agonizing portrait of desperate Japanese soldiers stranded in a strange land during World War II, Kon Ichikawa’s Fires on the Plain is a compelling descent into psychological and physical oblivion. Denied hospital treatment for tuberculosis and cast off into the unknown, Private Tamura treks across an unfamiliar Philippine landscape, encountering an increasingly debased cross section of Imperial Army soldiers, who eventually give in to the most terrifying craving of all. Grisly yet poetic, Fires on the Plain is one of the most powerful works from one of Japanese cinema’s most versatile filmmakers.

Tamura (Eiji Funakoshi), the hero of Kon Ichikawa’s overwhelming Fires on the Plain, may be the loneliest man in the history of the movies—lonelier than the spiritual pilgrims of Bergman, Bresson, and Dreyer. He is a soldier in an army that, in defeat, has turned its back on him.

It’s 1945, on Leyte island in the Phillippines: Japan’s forces are so decisively beaten that they have abandoned all pretense of solidarity, of camaraderie—of the basic responsibility of men at war to protect each other. In the movie’s first scene, the tubercular Tamura—who has been discharged, still sick, from a field hospital, because there isn’t enough room for the patients and the staff—is told by his angry squad leader that he must return to the hospital; His own unit won’t accept the burden of sustaining him in a debilitated state. The officer sends him on his way with six miserable-looking potatoes and one bleak piece of advice: If the hospital won’t take him back, he should kill himself.

After this grim scene, Tamura sets off on a journey through an unimaginably hostile landscape. The U.S. Army controls the roads. The Filipinos hate the Japanese for having turned their farmlands into battlegrounds. And Tamura’s fellow soldiers are so desperate and hungry that some, in full retreat from their humanity, fall back too far, to the terrible refuge beyond the line that finally seperates civilization from savagery: They will kill other men for food.

In the 1952 novel by Shohei O-oka on which this film is based, Tamura reflects: “For people like us, living day and night on the brink of danger, the normal instinct of survival seems to strike inward, like a disease, distorting the personality and removing all motives other than those of sheer self interest.” Tamura—consumptive, starved and often delirious--wanders in a kind of moral daze. He’s in hell, but he’s not quite ready to enlist in the army of the damned; while he fights off the swarming enemies without, he continues to battle the ravenous enemy within.

Fires on the Plain is, of course, an antiwar film—maybe the most persuasive and powerful ever. But it’s more than that: not merely a relentless series of vivid, shocking tableaux, but also a lucid and eerily pure inquiry into the mysterious workings of the human will. At every stage of Tamura’s episodic trek across Leyte, the nature of his choices changes. As, one by one, elements of what we take to be normal life abruptly disappear, the hero has to figure out how to act within this constantly narrowing set of possibilities, and, in the end, whether it’s worth acting at all. The story, written for the screen by Natto Wada (the director’s wife), unfolds with the cruel logic of a nightmare, pushing Tamura further and further from his men until finally, without solace or sustenance, he turns away from the camera and walks off, receding into the immense distance towards an uncertain fate. It’s tempting to call the movie an existential fable—but that label would diminish it, too. Fires on the Plain is unique and irreducible: It takes us through unspeakable horrors to arrive at an unnamable beauty.

The only movie that remotely resembles Fires on the Plain is John Huston’s 1951 Stephen Crane adaptation, The Red Badge of Courage, which like Ichikawa’s film, evokes the inferno of war with such sensual immediacy that the scarred landscapes and the ragged, exhausted soldiers have a feverish kind of vitality. In a way, Ichikawa is the Japanese Huston. He is a brilliant interpreter of literary texts, and he has been so prolific and versatile in his nearly 50-year film career that film scholars and auteur-ish critics tend to give him short shrift. Of his dozens of movies, only a handful have been released in the U.S., and even those few are remarkable diverse. The claustrophobic, perverse erotic comedy Odd Obsession (1959), adapted from a Tanazaki adaptation, The Makioka Sisters (1983), which is lyrical and expansive. Enjo (1958), from Mashima, is a formally austere study of spiritual torment. An Actor’s Revenge (1963) is a reckless, invigorating melange of styles, as flamboyant and bloody as a Jacobean tragedy. And Tokyo Olympiad (1965) is a virtuosic documentary essay on the pleasures and rigors of athletic competition. Most tellingly, his other antiwar film, The Burmese Harp (1956), is entirely different from Fires on the Plain: The earlier movie is dreamier, more contemplative, and infinitely more optimistic—the defeated Japanese soldiers remain bound by their love for each other.

In Fires on the Plain, there’s no such comfort. Here all men are islands, and Ichikawa’s stark widescreen compositions make the distances between them look impossibly vast. The Everyman hero winds up alone with himself; his only consolation is that he has, at least, managed to salvage from war’s devastation a self that he still recognizes as human. When he walks away from us, towards the last of the movie’s many unreachable-seeming horizons, he appears to be heading not for some ultimate frontier of defeat but into a harsh radiance whose source only he can see. And when the screen goes dark, the blackness looks absolute, and terrifying; it strikes inward, with a suddenness of grace. Fires on the Plain is a great movie: an intimate and blindingly clear vision of apocalypse.

Seung sing (aka Confession of Pain) (2006)

Confession of Pain is draped in deep melancholy. From story to cinematography, one cannot escape the strong moodiness painted by the creative trio of directors Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, and together with writer Felix Chong, this movie is widely anticipated as the one which will top their earlier acclaimed creation, Infernal Affairs. And signs were positive too, as they had snagged great leads in Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro.

But unfortunately, the strengths and chemistry between the two leads are what lifted the movie from mediocrity. Both Leung and Kaneshiro again play cop roles in the same movie (the other being Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express as lowly beat cops 663 and 223), and in the prologue, we're introduced to their close friendship, as well as a bust which set the tone for the movie, and added a shade of grey to one of their characters.

We know Kaneshiro can do intense. His recent roles in Perhaps Love as the obsessive, driven lover boy, and House of Flying Daggers' bewildered constable Jin, are nothing short of being spirited. Here, his Bong character looked somewhat similar to Aaron Kwok's role in Divergence, as the cop who's turning to the bottle in seeking solace for love lost, and the perennial quest to uncover the Whys to his past relationship. Tony Leung, well, we all know what he can do, and he doesn't disappoint. His role as Detective Hei brings about a duality of sorts, and he delivers this dilemma perfectly. The two men, while best friends, are almost in complete opposites from one another in character, yet their bond is strong, up until the final scene, which probably explains the title.

It's surprising that the story decided to show its hand midway in the movie. While it doesn't exactly provide any definitive answers, by planting that seed of thought in you during its presentation, it locks your thoughts in and doesn't allow them to wriggle free. You're left wondering why, the rationale behind the actions, as well as the filmmakers' deliberate lack of effort of hiding the truth/ Bong's character will bring you on that journey of discovery. however, audiences who have consumed their fair share of crime stories, will find it a no- brainer connecting the dots themselves when the clues are presented.

Which is a pity, because everything turned predictable thereafter, narratively. However, stylistically, it is what assisted in keeping the attention on screen. The cinematography is brilliant, capturing moody loss and melancholy effortlessly in its never ending night shots of the cloudy city, unappealing streets, and empty apartments, and the effects enhanced crime recreation probably is one of the best I've seen coming out from Hong Kong. The pacing is kept tight, and a pursuit of a villain on foot was reminiscent of David Fincher's Seven where John Doe gave our detectives a run for their money.

The supporting characters had little to do, and I find it difficult to try and think up reasons for their roles besides being there for our leads' interaction. Shu Qi is largely wasted in her role as a beer maid and romantic interesting for Bong, and Chapman To, an Andrew Lau and Alan Mak film regular, finds himself as a fellow cop in yet another role for comedic effect, in trying to lighten up moods whenever Bong and Hei begin to wallow. Xu Jinglei as Susan, Hei's wife, also had fairly little to do except to love her husband, and to show pain when things had to go the way they did.

Decorated with a great soundtrack, Confession of Pain is an adequately engaging story of friendship, loss, and the sacrifices one makes in achieving one's goals. The truth is always never easy to swallow, and discovery it seems, would be just as painful as the outcome.
